I've been using my RK802III with the TV the last years and it works great. I mostly use it for streaming services.

Now I see that some services start to require Android 4.3. The last update for the RK802III is 4.2.2.

Are there any plans for upgrades?
If not what do you do with your devices? Just buy a new one?

Are there any real reasons why Android 5/6 couldn't run on the RK802III?

I just found a firmware with 4.4.2 that seems to work fine. I have flashed my MK802III with it and used it for an hour. Seems ok

I have made some research and from what I found there are now newer versions for these devices.

I'm still using this firmware and it seems to work fine. All streaming services that I use work fine. Hopefully I'll manage some more years from this little dongle
